About this experience
Fly to Lalibela & Visit Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
In the morning, you'll fly to Lalibela and tour the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This group of 11 monolithic and semi-monolithic structures were carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 800 years ago. This complex boasts the largest monolithic church in the world, a maze of passageways and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs, and fabulous examples of icon paintings.
Day 2
Trek to Asheton, and Visit Yemerhane Kirstos Cave Church
You'll take a morning hike with mules to Mount Asheton, with its 13th-century rock-hewn monastery and great views of the town. Alternatively, you'll drive to Yemrehanna Kristos, a beautiful church situated in a shallow cave that predates the churches of Lalibela. The drive to Yemrehanna will also allow you to view the rural countryside and villages of the Ethiopian highlands. Following either option, you will continue with a tour of Lalibelaβs churches in the afternoon.
Day 3
Fly back to Addis Ababa
After breakfast in your hotel, we will transfer you to Lalibela Airport and return to Addis Ababa via Ethiopian Airlines. There is an optional half-day city tour of Addis Ababa with an evening cultural dinner. You'll transfer to the airport for a late-night departure if needed.
