About this experience

The Simien Mountains are one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural landscapes and are located in the northern part of the country, in the Amhara Region. The area is famous for its dramatic mountain scenery, deep valleys, steep cliffs, high plateaus, and impressive peaks. Some peaks rise above 4,000 meters, making the Simien Mountains one of the highest mountain areas in Africa.
The mountains were formed by ancient volcanic activity and have been shaped over millions of years by erosion. Their spectacular landscapes include enormous escarpments, narrow valleys, waterfalls, and unusual rock formations. The scenery is particularly beautiful during sunrise and sunset, when the cliffs and valleys are covered in changing colors.
The Simien Mountains are also important because of their unique wildlife. They are home to the gelada, a grass-eating monkey found only in the Ethiopian highlands. Visitors may see large groups of geladas moving across the mountain slopes. The mountains are also home to the Walia ibex, a rare wild goat found nowhere else in the world, and the Ethiopian wolf, one of the world’s rarest canids.
The Simien Mountains National Park protects much of this remarkable environment. It was established to conserve the area's wildlife, plants, and landscapes and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The park is also an important destination for trekking and adventure tourism.
Visitors can take multi-day hikes through villages, valleys, and highland plateaus while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Popular trekking areas include Sankaber, Gich, Chenek, and Imet Gogo. Along the way, travelers can experience the traditional lifestyle and hospitality of communities living in the highlands.
The Simien Mountains are more than a beautiful tourist destination. They represent an important part of Ethiopia’s natural heritage and provide a home for rare animals and plants. Their dramatic scenery, rich biodiversity, and cultural significance make the Simien Mountains one of the most remarkable places to visit in Ethiopia.
